Five Weeks and a Day - A NICU Story - Day 6

Updated: Oct 2, 2021

Day 6 - August 19, 2014

Sean FINALLY holds his baby girl for the first time! He holds her skin to skin in her "scuba gear" and we get to gaze at her deep, dark blue peepers for almost two hours.

LoLa's bilirubin levels are decreasing as a result of the phototherapy. Her feeds are increasing quickly, but she has lost some weight and only weighs around three and a half pounds. She receives all nutrition through a feeding tube. Sometimes she regurgitates part of her feeding and her bowels are still lazy, requiring suppositories to help her pass the thick meconium.

Her oxygen concentration has been decreased to just above 21% which is the oxygen concentration in room air. This is very good because too much oxygen can actually become toxic to the lung tissue and cause damage if used for prolonged periods of time. The medications she has been receiving through IV will be given through the feeding tube because the IV is discontinued today! Finally some forward progress!
